Well I haven't been publishing too much besides the tour schedules as I have been busy unpacking and organizing my new garage / shop. I was hoping to be bringing you some new video from over the summer; however my camera and computer are no longer synced. So while I battle with a solution on the video end, I thought I would report on my latest project, the High Roller Customs back flip ski.

Eastpointe, MI - The APBA is excited to announce the newest Tour stop on the 2010 APBA
Watercross National Tour – Belle River, Canada. It has been more than 10 years that a
National event has been held in Canada and the APBA is excited to see racing return to Eastern
Canada. The event will take place on July 17-18, 2010 at Lakeview Park in Belle River Canada.
Belle River is just across the border from Detroit, Michigan not far from Windsor Canada. The
event will be held the week after the Harbor Beach, Michigan national event that will make it
easy for racers to attend and save on travel expenses.
The Belle River
event will be a
great race with a
HUGE cash purse
that is expected to
be the largest
cash purse
offered in many
years. Belle River
is an historic town
in beautiful Lakeshore bordering Lake St. Clair. With an
abundance of sights to see, things to do, and places to shop,
Belle River is an ideal location to host an event. Minutes away are great marine and golf
resorts, inviting beaches, camping, museums, conservation areas, and historic buildings.
Lakeview Park is a first class facility with a pristine white sandy beach and many great
amenities. The city recently received a 3 million grant to upgrade Lakeview Park, so you can
expect many new features to the already beautiful facility.
The event will take place within the boundaries of Lakeview
Park on Lake St. Clair and run in conjunction with the 16th
Annual SunSplash Festival. In addition to professional
watercross racing the annual festival features a classic Car
Cruise with over 500 classic cars that will line the eleven
blocks of downtown. Just a sampling of the other events
includes: a carnival with rides, parade, vendor booths, arts and crafts, refreshment tent with free
fun and continuous entertainment including live bands that start Friday night and will dazzle you
right through Sunday.
The 2010 APBA Watercross National Tour will also have stops in Parker, Arizona - Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina; Harbor Beach, Michigan; Colonial Beach, Virginia; and finish off the
season with the APBA Watercross Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee. The APBA is searching
for one more West Coast stop to complete the 2010 schedule. The APBA has worked hard,
together with its race promoters, to find some of the best race sites in the country with nice
beaches, clean water and fun locations. The 2010 National Tour will have over $90,000 in cash
and prizes up from grabs in 2010.

After visiting the IJSBA site and reading the recommendations for freestyle I have to wonder if and when someone besides all of the freestylers is going to 'get it.' If you read the following exerpt from the IJSBA, you will notice that even though Rick Roy attempted to make his point (which is the point of many freestylers), his efforts went unnoticed. The IJSBA noted: "hull technology has changed rapidly and the relationship between Freestyle and use of an OEM PWC has diminished rapidly"... Really? Is that because the OEMs have chosen to completely ignore the freestyle market, not creating a freestyle friendly ski in years. Kawasaki hasn't made a freestyle usable ski since 1994 and Yamaha just dropped their freestyle friendly Super Jet design in efforts to go after the stand-up racing segment again. Can't an OEM design more than 1 stand-up? And what is with all of the replication terminology? The IJSBA should take note in the increase of jet ski (freestyle) related shops that create and sell those new aftermarket hulls. Screw the OEMs. Let's build the sport on the backs of shop owners like grass roots sports are supposed to be.
From IJSBA -
Freestyle
For years, the Freestyle classes stayed remarkably constant. The most notable names in Freestyle pushed competition and tricks to heights that were so noteworthy that clips and segments of these performances started making global news. Remarkably, these pioneers shared their skill and helped develop hulls and other products which allowed the general public to perform the same tricks. What followed is an entire generation of Freestyle Competitors who are all capable of the same dazzling tricks that once guaranteed only a small subset of athletes could make the podium. In doing so, the hull technology has changed rapidly and the relationship between Freestyle and use of an OEM PWC has diminished rapidly. What is most notable about this is that the proliferation of the more exotic hulls and engine combinations has actually increased Freestyle participation (likely because the hulls help with the tricks).

I came across this heart-felt video from Erik Buell in regards to the closing of Buell Motorcycles. There is no doubt that it won't be long before we are hearing about a new Erik Buell and team innovation, but it won't be on a Buell Motorcycle. The video came after Harley-Davidson, Inc. announced that it will discontinue the Buell® product line as part of Harley-Davidson’s go-forward business strategy. The new long-term strategy aims to drive Company growth through a focus of efforts and resources on the Harley-Davidson® brand.

Team Twangled Rider Kyle Burtka had a close call in the chilly waters of Lake Michigan last Sunday at the Chicago Air and Water Show. While piloting his custom made jet ski in front of millions of fans Kyle's ski suffered a hood and bilge pump failure causing the boat to sink to the sandy bottom off North Avenue Beach.

Round 3 of the Great Lakes Watercross tour was a great time. If you missed it, you missed yet another one of Scott Hyke's AWSOME race sites. I was a bit disappointed to learn that we were in fact in the Black River and not the mighty Mississippi, but it was still great to ride in the Mississippi River system. It could not have been at a more convenient locations it not only had a beach and a launch with adequate parking, but a Shoney's was also only a few hundred feet away! It is nice being able to grab a bite between races.
Another great aspect of this event were the sponsors. Special thanks to Steiger Powersports and Skat-Trak for their contributions. Rod Hall was on site representing Steiger Powersports and did so in fine fashion, handing out hundreds of t-shirts and sporting prizes to overall race winners. As a rider that has seen it all in 15+ years of competition, from small regional tours to fully sponsored National Tours, and watched a great deal of it go away (sponsors and prizes), it was exceptionally rewarding to walk away with some swag and certificate dollars. It has been a while since I have seen sponsors making this kind of efforts. Hats off to all of the sponsors and Scott for putting together a great event. I should have some Vintage helmet cam posted sometime this week for all of you to enjoy.

One round Jet ski water cross on the Black River just shy of the ole Mississippi. What a sight for Racing and Freestyle. Tight course wavy bottom made for some challenging riding and high lap counts. On the freestyle side Gary Burtka continued to show his understanding of water conditions. Taking first with a routine designed to deal with shallow water. The sight required a tight course so we did not interfere with traffic on the Black River.

The Third round of the Great Lakes Watercross Tour is heading to La Crosse, Wisconsin to heat up the waters of the mighty Mississippi on Blackriver Beach.
Come out and enjoy some great Pro and am racing and freestyle action. This first two rounds kicked off the tour in Pleasant Prairie and established some early points leaders in many top classes. Let's see who keeps those points leads, who jump's ahead, and who falls behind in Round three.

Last weekend at Lake Andrea, Pleasant Prairie Wisconsin the first round of the Great lakes Tour began. Though the winds off lake Michigan were a bit cool. They were easily offset by Hot racing and freestyle action. Which included a 1 minute run off in Pro Freestyle between Gary Burtka and Mike Hoffman. Races ran smoothly and the Sun came out in full force on Sunday for round two.

CHICAGO - With just over 2 full days remaining before the official start of the 2009 tour for Team Twangled, the excitement is starting to brew. No its isn't time for the season largest event, nor are we even really warmed up for the competition. Never-the-less, nearly 9 months of downtime between contests is sure to tarnish even the best of riders early in the season, and practice can only get you ready to a certain point. Beyond that, the practice is really getting more contests under your belt.

CHICAGO, ILL - I recently had a chance to catch up to the head of the PWC division of the APBA, Patrick Mell. Mell is in the process of making all of his final preparations for his 2009 Monster Energy Midwest Watercross Tour, which includes two APBA National Tour events which he co-promotes with long-time watercraft event promoter, Jacques Bryant. Mell has extended the invitation for the APBA Nationals to all riders hoping to include riders from distant regions or regions that do not have APBA regional events.
